‘Amaurosis Fugax: The Strange Cause Of Vision Loss, What Is It, Causes And More’ This may seem a strange topic with which to base our Mental Health Wednesday blog upon. However when you watch the video below, you shall understand. Titling this post in a positive and encouraging way, was the hardest thing about this post. I was first diagnosed with Amaurosis when I had not long moved to Scotland. So the first question which many of you will most likely be asking yourselves is, What the heck is Amaurosis?
If you need a statement of the condition. Amaurosis is a medical condition characterized by a sudden and complete loss of vision in one or both eyes. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including nerve damage, eye injury, or a blockage in the blood vessels that supply the eye. In this essay, we will explore the concept of amaurosis, its causes, symptoms, and potential treatments.
‘Amaurosis Fugax: Causes
Amaurosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including nerve damage, eye injury, or a blockage in the blood vessels that supply the eye. Some of the most common causes of amaurosis include:
- Retinal detachment: This occurs when the retina, which is the thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye, becomes separated from the underlying layers of the eye.
- Glaucoma: This is a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve, which is the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain.
- Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing amaurosis due to damage to the blood vessels in the eye.
- Cataracts: This is a condition that causes clouding of the lens in the eye, leading to decreased vision.
- Stroke: A stroke can cause damage to the blood vessels that supply the eye, leading to amaurosis.
‘Amaurosis Fugax: Symptoms
The symptoms of amaurosis can vary depending on the underlying cause of the condition. In general, people with amaurosis experience a sudden and complete loss of vision in one or both eyes. Other symptoms may include:
- Numbness or weakness on one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Confusion or disorientation
- Severe headache
- Dizziness or loss of balance
- Loss of consciousness

‘Amaurosis Fugax: Treatment
The treatment for amaurosis depends on the underlying cause of the condition. If the cause is a blockage in the blood vessels that supply the eye, treatment may involve medication to dissolve the clot or surgery to remove the blockage. If the cause is nerve damage, treatment may involve medication to reduce inflammation or surgery to repair the damaged nerve.
In some cases, vision may be restored after treatment for amaurosis. However, if the damage to the eye or nerve is severe, vision may not be restored completely.
‘Amaurosis Fugax: Prevention:
Some of the ways to prevent amaurosis include:
- Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
- Getting regular eye exams to detect any underlying conditions that may lead to amaurosis.
- Managing underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
- Protecting the eyes from injury by wearing protective eyewear during sports and other activities.
How The Condition Effects Me Each And Every Day:
As mentioned above Amaurosis Fugax is a condition that affects the eyes, specifically the retina and the optic nerve, and effects me in much the same way. Though a rare occurrence, when it does hit, it can be disarming. It is a type of temporary vision loss that occurs when blood flow to the retina is reduced or blocked. This condition can be caused by a number of different factors, including atherosclerosis, blood clots, or emboli. Still, I manage day to day without much of a problem. I still paint and write every single day, being as I am able to feel my ways around the keys and know exactly which letters I am hitting upon the laptop, and knowing my way around a canvas as well as anyone who took to the paint.

Conclusion:
Amaurosis is a serious medical condition that can cause sudden and complete loss of vision in one or both eyes. The underlying causes of the condition can vary, but the most common include nerve damage, eye injury, or a blockage in the blood vessels that supply the eye. If you experience sudden loss of vision, it is important to seek medical attention immediately to determine the underlying cause.

P.S.S As for whether screen time is associated with amaurosis, there is currently no evidence to suggest that this is the case. Amaurosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including a stroke or other neurological condition, and is not typically linked to screen time. However, excessive screen time may cause other vision-related symptoms, such as eye strain, dry eyes, and headaches. If you are experiencing any vision-related symptoms, it is important to talk to an eye doctor to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
