Mince and tatties is a classic Scottish dish that features flavorful minced beef served with mashed potatoes. Here’s a recipe to make mince and tatties:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef (minced beef)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 cup (240ml) beef stock
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the mashed potatoes:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk or cream
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until the onion is softened and translucent.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and beef stock. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the flavors have melded together and the sauce has thickened slightly. Adjust the seasoning if needed.
- While the mince is simmering, prepare the mashed potatoes. Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork, usually about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk or cream to the pot. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or a fork until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- To serve, spoon a portion of the mince onto a plate, and top it with a generous dollop of mashed potatoes.
Mince and tatties is a simple yet comforting dish that can be enjoyed on its own or served with additional vegetables or gravy. It’s a traditional Scottish favorite that showcases the delicious combination of minced beef and creamy mashed potatoes.
