Cancel culture is a form of social activism that involves publicly calling out individuals or groups for their controversial or offensive actions. Beliefs, or statements may also be added in, demanding that they be held accountable. Cancel culture is often facilitated through social media platforms. This often happens where individuals share their opinions and experiences, and mobilize others to join their cause. Cancel culture typically involves:

One of the main arguments in favor of cancel culture is that it holds individuals and groups accountable for their actions and beliefs. This approach, allows marginalized groups to voice their concerns, and demand that those in power be held responsible for their behavior. Cancel culture can create a sense of community and solidarity among individuals who share similar values and beliefs. Cancel culture can serve as a powerful tool for social change. Some of the ways which it does this is to: Encourage individuals and organizations to rethink their actions and beliefs and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

Last night…

As Katie and I were getting ready for bed, I received an unexpected notification from Facebook.

Looking down I could see, they were informing me that due to

‘Alleged’ multiple copyright infringements, they would exercise their rights, and delete my account from their platform.

The event began several hours prior to receiving this message, after a certain famous meteorologist flagged a post I had shared as an infringement of his intellectual property. Remember the word shared and that I had shared it not claimed it as my own.

The video

The video captured a violent tornado outbreak in Andover, USA last year. The caption which I added to this post was: ‘

We are sending our love and prayers to all impacted by the recent tornado outbreak

At no point did I claim to be this meteorologist, nor did I claim the content as my own. Yet here we are 24 hours later, rebuilding our own disaster.

The video was removed and so was I. With no chance of a fair appeal, my content, my history and memories upon Facebook were wiped clean… Or were they?

This is not my first rodeo. I know only too well how Facebook works, having been around at its inception. I also knew that having created several groups and business pages, I could ensure the safety of our clientele and audience should anything like this ever arise.

All I needed to do was to wait, open a new account, resume as admin and pick up right where I left off.

This may sound devious and underhanded. However, when one understands how the social media game is played, one also must be prepared for anything, especially in business.

So as I conclude, here are some lessons which I hope you shall take from this.

  1. Never put all your eggs in one basket.
  2. If you are going to do business on social media, make sure to protect yourself. Create groups for your audience and make sure to have additional admins
  3. Don’t fret over what you cannot chance. Sometimes when life feels as if it is falling apart, it is actually falling into place
  4. Finally, remember even the greatest stink can be cleaned up and made fresh once more. Just keep cool, collected and focused.
