This reaffirmed something I had always believed: religion alone won’t create peace, nor will politics. But the arts? They have a chance. Music, painting, and theatre have the power to unite even the most desperate souls. Through this realisation, opportunities began to come my way. However, with every peak, there is a valley.
Success and Struggle: The Balancing Act
In life, success and struggle are often viewed as opposites, yet they are intricately connected in a dynamic balancing act. Success is typically seen as the culmination of hard work, perseverance, and achievement, while struggle is considered the painful, difficult journey that precedes it. However, the reality is that one cannot exist without the other, and the path to success is often paved with struggle. The relationship between the two is nuanced, and understanding how to balance them can lead to personal growth, fulfillment, and resilience.

It’s easy to get caught up in the difficulties of life and forget to celebrate the progress we’ve made. If we constantly focus on the struggle, we risk losing sight of the victories, both big and small, that have brought us to where we are.
The fine line between success and struggle is found in the way we approach each. If we only focus on success and ignore the struggles, we may find ourselves unprepared for the challenges that arise. On the other hand, if we focus solely on the struggle, we may lose sight of the progress we’ve made and feel as though success is always just out of reach. Just as my work was gaining recognition, my health took a hit. A medical crisis forced me to step away from university, adding uncertainty to an already shifting foundation.
To add to the turmoil, my flatmate moved out to start a new chapter in his life, leaving me scrambling for a stable place to live. I had a beautiful flat by the beach, but my declining health and medication left me feeling vulnerable and isolated.
A friend extended a helping hand, offering me a place to stay. Despite a strong gut feeling—a divine warning, even—I accepted. At the time, it felt like a lifeline, but in hindsight, it was the beginning of another valley.
Yet, amidst personal struggles, my art continued to thrive. My youth group expanded, and soon, my work caught the attention of someone who would change the course of my life forever.

Meeting Anna Renault: An Art from the heart Life-Altering Connection
Through my growing online presence, a group of women took notice of my artistic endeavours. They reached out, requesting I illustrate for them. Though I didn’t consider myself particularly skilled in this area at the time, I accepted the challenge. One of these women stood out—Anna Renault.
Anna was more than just a client; she was a force of nature. A cancer warrior with an indomitable spirit, she believed in my talent and saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet fully recognised in myself. She offered her home, her time, and her resources to help me make the most of my artistic tour in America.
Before meeting her, I travelled across the U.S., making stops in Nebraska, Colorado, Dallas, and Chicago, before finally arriving in Maryland. Everything was falling into place. I felt inspired, motivated, and supported.
But remember what I said about valleys? This one was about to drop out from beneath me.
A Shocking Setback: Losing Stability Once Again
Out of the blue, my housemate back in Scotland reached out with devastating news: he was ending my stay with him immediately. No warning, no discussion—just a firm decision that left me stunned and terrified.
Anna, ever the beacon of support, encouraged me to stay in America. She saw the potential for a new life for me there. However, feeling the weight of expectations and responsibilities back home, I sought guidance from my church. Their advice? Return home.
And so, I did.
What awaited me was nothing short of heartbreaking. My belongings had been moved, my sense of stability shattered. I was given a choice: a comfortable room in a shared home with two professional Christian women or a lesser-known rental in Ayr’s city centre. Concerned about the church’s judgement, I chose the latter.
Big mistake.
Surviving in the Darkest of Places
The new flat was nothing like I had hoped. It was in one of the worst areas imaginable, surrounded by chaos. Drug dealers, addicts, and sex workers occupied the building. Raids became a regular occurrence. Violence, noise, and a complete lack of safety defined my daily life.
The walls felt like they were closing in on me. Depression and anxiety took hold. Had my bedroom window not been stuck shut, I don’t know if I would have survived.
I was alone. Abandoned. Forgotten.
But not entirely.

The Turning Point: Strength in Unlikely Places
When I thought all hope was lost, someone entered my life who changed everything. A young woman whose kindness, resilience, and unwavering belief in me became the anchor I desperately needed.
Through her support and strength, I slowly found my way back. She reminded me of who I was before the darkness, before the setbacks. And she reignited my belief that I could still shape my future.
God had also shown me that I would get out of this. And I did.
The Power of Art and Faith
Looking back, every moment of struggle shaped me into the person I am today. The valleys tested me, but they also refined me. They led me to understand that art is more than just a creative outlet—it is a tool for survival, a means of connection, and a catalyst for change.
